Alton Brown’s stovetop and baked macaroni methods work so I combined the two to make my own.
My 3 secrets are:

- crushing fried onions into my buttered panko topping
- adding Louisiana hot sauce to my homemade cheddar sauce
- using seasoning salt with extra onion

1/3 cup fried onions (crushed)

4 oz fully cooked Easter ham (diced)
1/4 cup fried onions (crushed)

4. Layer drained elbow mac. Add thick cheddar sauce on top. In a separate bowl, melt 1/2 stick butter and combine with panko, fried onions and chervil. Layer crumbs on top of sauce.

You can eat it in a bowl with a spoon and feel like a kid again. Avoid sprinkling diced ham for mac and cheese for vegetarian guests.
