Allow yourself to have a serving or more of carbohydrates such as rice or pasta on the evening before a four-hour hike. You’ll need the energy. It’s true what white rice or low-fiber pasta cooks in about 10 minutes. If you have more time and zombies aren’t knocking down your apartment door yet, consider fixing yourself brown rice and whole grain pasta.

Add antioxidants to your smoothie. You can blend blueberries, strawberries or mangoes with skim milk and raw rolled oats (not steel cut because it may jam the blender) for a nourishing breakfast on the morning of the hike. Fresh fruit also helps your body combat the stress of outrunning zombies. The rolled oats help sustain your body for a workout because it digests slowly. Jeremy warns that raw blended oats are an acquired taste. It becomes pleasant and you might look forward to a thick chewable oaty shake after a few of these. Some choose to add bananas and a spoonful of peanut butter. It’s up to you.
Avoid overdoing fiber supplements because you won’t want to upset your bowels when you aren’t likely to have outdoor toilets with plumbing. Besides you know to beware of bathrooms: zombies might choose to attack when you are most vulnerable.

Skip eating more than 25 grams of protein in less than two hours. More than that is wasteful because your body can’t make use of all that in such a short period. Look at the nutrition label of your bar or drinkable supplement. Consume just enough of the protein to fortify your body. For instance, split the portion with a friend if there isn’t a way to keep the leftovers.
Pack food, fruit and beverages to refuel during your hiking trip. Suggested fruits include bananas and grapefruit. Trail mix bars such as Mojo are Jeremy’s favorite. Bring water. Also pack a type of vitamin-fortified water and sports drink to replace the sodium that you will sweat out.

What are 3 reasons to choose hiking as fitness training?
Parking is cheap. Instead of paying for a daily pass, consider buying a season permit that charges per car. That means you can get a Ford Focus full of friends and split the cost. Even a 20 minutes drive to the trailhead will be fun compared to finding yourself alone at a bus station shooting zombies Call of Duty Black Ops II-style.
Socialize while exercising. It’ll feel more like fun than a workout when you can laugh together. It also doesn’t hurt to build bonds now before trust means survival on DayZ.
Enjoy the outdoors. Get some natural Vitamin D from the sun while protecting your skin with shades, a hat and sunblock. Relish being out in the open rather than hiding in a pool hall from the seventh wave of the walking dead.

What’s a good way to choose a hiking area based on your group’s skill level?
Read through the reviews on Yelp. Note the tough terrain for beginners, challenges for intermediates and serious climbs for the advanced.
