Disruptive. Breakthrough. New. What do these terms really mean? In MBA-speak it’s the opposite of derivative. In other words, the innovation is transformative. Robin Raskin of Living in Digital Times invited SGL Media to cover the Variety Breakthrough of the Year Awards at International CES in Las Vegas on January 9th. As what? As New Media!
What makes us new media? Not paparazzi: guerilla blogging photojournalists on the official press list. Las Vegas is a known venue for early adopters as technology, commercial real estate and entertainment.
Who represented SGL Media on the red carpet as press? Our very own Associate Editor Erica Tyler, fresh from a trip touring the real region of Caesar’s Palace (i.e. Istanbul, Greece, Rome).
As new media, she road tested her intuitive Retina iPad Mini’s camera, across two continents, versus her unitasker Olympic digital camera.
Thus, we chose the iPad for our shots to capture the Variety Breakthrough of the Year Award winners. Winners included Writer Erica Oyama of the digital series: Burning Love, Actress Kristen Bell of Kickstarter-funded film Veronica Mars, Electric Lady Musician Janelle Monae, and Comedian Amy Schumer.

Be That Early Adopter in Your Industry
Traditional SLR and hybrid-digital veteran photojournalists were welcoming, echoing the spirit of welcome innovations to the industry of reporting. Not the old way of doing things yet respectful of best practices:that’s SGL Media.
Reciprocal professional courtesy is timeless. New Media SGL wore hands-free Runnurs instead of bulky backpacks or perilous purses, taking a tip from veteran heavy metal photojournalist Laina Dawes to go as sleek as possible as etiquette.
Las Vegas was the first major venue in 1955 to lift the segregation policy that kept Sammy Davis Jr. apart from his Rat Pack (i.e. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra) from being served at any bar on the Strip or from grabbing a hotel key at the Sands instead of off-strip Moulin Rouge.
Be Winsome and Collaborative
Accept graciousness. Accept the foldaway pedestals to even out the playing field for petite reporters.
Adhere to the policy of your journalism outlet but reciprocate or offer backup if a fellow photojournalist’s camera malfunctions. Each journalist outlet is given a sticker to mark standing room to capture red carpet notables. He/she has an earned spot. During a pause, a photojournalist might assist another reporter who missed a shot by taking a shot with a borrowed camera.
That is badass “team familiarity” brewing as you’ve read in Harvard Business Review in December 2013. The leadership article “The Hidden Benefits of Keeping Teams Intact” by Robert Huckman and Bradley Staats, came to life for me in the photojournalists’ pit. I witnessed teams earning social capital for the next event and being that much more productive.
Treat working as press as an athletic event. Eat right. Stay hydrated. Send one of your staff to the bar, during the shoot for to-go plastic cups of Coke over ice with straws. In other words, have one of your team hold the drink while your breakthrough new media buddy takes a sip. Worry about how it might look? Nah, it’s Vegas. Plus, your crew is made up of Mike & Sully, Sherlock & Watson and Samwise & Frodo. Right? Fist-bump to the photojournalist fellowship!
Why? SGL Media during the shoot wanted the caffeine kick and real sugar without the Jack Daniels. On a step-stool in dressy tweed flats? Of course, you’d wait for Strawberry Margarita and Cosmos when you are off-the-clock.
Use apps as tools across devices
Need to communicate across different operation systems and service providers? No problem. Need an example? SGL Media used Nokia Windows Android Phones and iPhones to text alert each other. When collaborating to make editorial decisions filtering 700+ digital photos down to a select 7 shots, we used an Acer laptop, a Retina iPad mini with ZAGGkeys keyboard cover and our respective smartphones. Fast? Yes. Seamless? Almost with the Dropbox albums to share organized folders in seconds. Gone are the days of emailing each other in endless threads. Picasa is even old-school now.
Use apps such as Dropbox to bridge the gap and share feature article drafts and pre-edited photo albums.
