The Paleo diet offers numerous benefits, but Denet offers a word of caution stating that it is better to approach Paleo (and indeed all “diets”) as a lifestyle change rather than simply a change in the types of foods you eat. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that any diet is foolproof. It is possible to make bad nutritional decisions, so vigilance is key. He cautions staying away from processed foods and making sure that the number of calories you consume go along with your activity level (an activity Level Calculator can be found herecourtesy of WebMD).
Eating Healthy Tips:
1) Stay in the perimeter of the grocery store in order to ward off the temptation of processed foods and stick to a healthier diet. Want to hear from Nutritional Consultant Nate Miyaki? You got it. Find him on High Five Fitness Episode #9: Healthy Eating for Athletes.
Like SGL Editor-in-Chief Renee Marchol, Nate Miyaki finds a way to mention Will Ferrell’s Anchorman Ron Burgundy in most life advice: “Debunking the Paleo Diet”.

2) If eating carbohydrates, choose “clean” carbs such as yams, oatmeal and brown rice. Also the more active you are, the more carbs you should eat.
3) Get your five a day, but make sure the majority of the five are made up of vegetables versus fruit due to the sugar content in fruit (think a ratio of three to five in favor of vegetables).
Exercise is a necessary component of a healthy lifestyle and Denet, whose fitness interests range from BMX biking to bodybuilding, states that consistency is the key. Starting a new workout regimen is no easy task, however, if you allow yourself flexibility, or the ability to “cheat” it may be easier to stick to a plan. He suggests that you set up a schedule with built in day(s) off and follow it for two weeks. The hope is that after the two weeks are up you will have incorporated exercise into your lifestyle and made it a habit.

Fitness Tips:
1) Don’t let lack of a gym membership stop you from working out. Utilize free resources such as the library for fitness DVD’s or search for free online fitness videos. Another check out Meetup Groups and see if any offer free fitness groups.
2) Make sure you have a recovery day to allow your body time to rest.
3) Don’t go too fast. If you have not worked out in a while don’t try to jump right in and workout for two hours a day. Consider a warm up with High Five Fitness Episode #6: Wake Up the Booty. Make sure to talk to a medical professional before starting any fitness plan and go at your own pace.
