This year I’m hosting Thanksgiving lunch at my apartment. I plan to serve pumpkin trifle, duchess potatoes and chicken saltimbocca. No turkey. Why? I”m not that advanced a cook.
Afterwards, I’d like to go to Catalina island or the Santa Barbara Zoo. This can be the same day or during the weekend.
I decided against doing the Turkey Trot for Thanksgiving morning because I’m already training for a 5K race that is the first week of December. However, if you are interested in burning off calories that morning, you can sign up for The Thanksgiving Day 5K/10K Turkey Trot Run/Walk on Thursday, November 24th at the Belmont Pool in Belmont Shore. Arrive 1/2 hour before the race to register or pick up pre-race packets the day before. This race benefits the Community Action Team nonprofit that does beach clean up.
Originally I wanted to be part of an all-girl cook off. Then I realized that my single days are over and my husband would like me around. The turkey-tastic carb-fest would have included recent recipes I found for butternut squash gratin and cranberry upside down cake. Just because I’m not organizing an event for single ladies doesn’t mean you can’t steal this idea. Just jot down the amount of ingredients, circulate a sign up sheet for who will bring what on Google Docs and have all the guests show up at the host’s place to cook. Then you eat together, chat, laugh, save money and enjoy sisterhood.
Another alternative would have been to take Quarry Girl’s suggestion and get a vegan Thanksgiving meal to go from Madeleine Bistro. I follow Tofu Guru, who is a vegan like Quarry Girl, so maybe I’d like the taste of the cafe’s vegan food. After eating my meal at somewhere tranquil and warm, I’d rent ice skates for $8 at Pershing Square for southland’s Downtown on Ice.
I also thought about driving down to San Diego for Dixieland Jazz Fest for a sit down meal and great live music.
Another choice would have been to go to The Laugh Factory so I could attend the comedy show and have a free dinner. This is available to anyone alone on the holidays or without a home. If you are still interested, you can have seatings at 1,3,5, and 7 P.M. Expect long lines. The Laugh Factory 8001 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90046.
This upcoming Nov. 12th, I’ll be at Cornerstone West LA Church for the 2 P.M.-7 P.M. Holiday Idea House. This is a craft workshop day hosted by the church Women’s Ministry. I’ve signed up for the Hannukah latke making workshop, Stockings for Soldiers and Feather Boa Wreath Making.
If you are interested in other church activities in anticipation of the holidays, University Bible Church is hosting an all-church lunch to honor seniors on November 20th at noon. Pacific Crossroads Bible Church is meeting at La Cienga Park for a brunch talk about the Downtown Women’s Center. You can RSVP by contacting JenniferAnnWallace@gmail.com if this interests you.
